Do you know how many universities are located in Daedeok? There are two – Daejeon Theological Seminary & College and Hannam University. Hannam University is the only establishment offering a 4-year undergraduate education. For this reason, Daedeok-gu and Hannam University have a close relationship. On August 27, the Media Center and HUA Online Honorary Ambassador conducted an interview with Park Jeong-hyun, the Head of the Daedeok District Office. Park Jeong-hyun’s, main pledge is ‘The creation of a start-up cluster complex for young people, urban regeneration projects, and the establishment of a metropolitan railway in the Chungcheong area’. As college student may be interested in jobs and start-ups, The Hannam Times visited the Daedeok District Office to ask Jeong-hyun about job creation and future plans.

Q1. First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your appointment as president of the 7th Daedeok District Office. Because you're the first female ward chief in Daedeok-Gu, you must have showed an unusual determination. Can you tell me about your determination?

A1. I heard that I was the first woman elected in Daejeon. So, I feel a heavy weight on my shoulders. I have taken two major resolutions. First, through solidarity with the weak, we create a framework to move toward a more fair society. Second, as a women politician, I will do my part to encourage more female to enter politics and head local governments. Do you happen to know how many female heads of top-level administrations are there? There are eight people including me. While 49 percent of the South Korean population is women, it is very wrong that women head less than 4 percent of basic organizations. So I'm going to lay the foundations for a lot more women to become basic leaders.

Q2. As a college student, I found out your commitment to business startups and jobs. Could you explain a little more about this commitment?

A2. There are three key aspects of my commitment: people, the environment, and the urban regeneration. Unlike other local constituencies, Daedeok-gu has a very limited urban infrastructure, which means there is a population outflow. Also, the only place without a movie theater is Daedeok-gu in Daejeon. So, to stop the outflow of population, I'm working on a $20-billion youth startup space by connecting with the urban infrastructure expansion plan and Hannam University in Ojeong-dong. There's a lot of talk these days about the fourth industrial revolution, and I don't think it's any use without a manufacturing foundation. So the manufacturing base has to be basic, and Daedeok-gu has an industrial manufacturing infrastructure located in Daehwa-dong. Taking advantage of these benefits, I want to make the most of them in Daedeok-gu to give young people the freedom to create, demonstrate and sell their products themselves. We're going to set up a foundation to boost the local economy to support young social entrepreneurs. Furthermore, we will provide practical support by establishing a department that can deal with the accounting, sales and marketing methods involved in starting businesses.

A3. I heard that you were very involved as a student activist, environmental activist, and citizen activist when you were in college. What advice can you give to Hannam University seniors who are about to embark in a career?

Q3. I've been a citizen’s campaigning for a very long time. So, I always say something to a lot of my friends who do citizen’s campaigning. I say, 'Always check where you stand.' That means, how will I spend my entire life? What am I doing in the whole social context? Civil rights activists work for social innovation. Then, not only do we care about environmental issues, but we should also care about politics and improving the system. So, seniors have to always examine the entire social flow and what they need to change, and think about how much my work can contribute to these changes. You know that adults like to say: "Live, it's nothing." You'll feel a lot if you live it. If I knew how much I would have taken up in my long, long life, I would be a little more relaxed. I recommend that college students look back and reflect on themselves. Also, I hope you will travel a lot. If you travel many places you have not been in Korea, you will have many memories and gained experience. As cultures are different from region to region, I think you can broaden your own horizon in new areas. Lastly, I want to recommend developing an historical consciousness. Have you had a lot of trouble lately with presidents who don't have an historical consciousness and perspective? To get a sense of history is very important. I think history is not made by a few smart people; it’s made by all people with their life. That means, you're part of history, your life is a draft and it becomes history. A sense of history will eventually find a place in you life, and then you will find yourself thinking, "How will I be happy?"

Park Jeong-hyun, president of Daedeok District Office, said, "I want to visit the site myself to help the needy, communicate with the residents, and make changes in the Daedeok District. Furthermore, I want to make Daedeokgu a lively place.” Park Jeong-hyun is planning many activities with Hannam University for our benefits. We should pay attention, share advice and give encouragement to her, who is working so hard for us.
