In Hannam University, there are different variety of dormitories. There is a JinLi home, SoMang home and a house of truth for the purpose of building up a spirit of autonomy, truth, freedom, service, and sound learning through common life. Besides, there are global house for foreign students, Linton dormitory for Linton Global Business department. However, many students living in dormitories have been suffering from various problems. There were problems such as curfew, delivery storage system and facilities. In an app called “EveryTime”, which is used by Hannam University students, many students suffered from the problems of soundproofing and cleanliness.
Then, what kinds of problems have been causing great inconvenience? First, there is a problem with the curfew in the dormitory. In Hannam University, the curfew time of dormitory is at 11 p.m. After the curfew time, all of dormitories have a system that doors of dormitories never opened except at once 12 p.m. It is a big problem that students have to spend a night outside because they cannot enter into the dormitory. In reality, this system was noticeably indicated as a problem at other university. There was an incident which student who wanted to go to hospital could not go and collapsed because of the curfew system. This system has yet to change or respond despite that students are always talking about it.
Second, there is a problem with delivery storage system in dormitory. The dormitory delivery storage is the inside. However, the inside of dormitory is only accessible with a security key. So, the delivery man cannot enter dormitory. Then, both delivery man and students suffered. Also, there are many students who have seen the delivery man unable to enter the dormitory by the locked door and opened it for them. This system needs to improve as the case of loss has taken place.
The last, there is a problem with defective facilities in dormitory. Cleanliness problems about filters of the washing machine, air conditioner, water purifier, etc. As many students use it, they need consistent care, but in reality there is no care for the facilities. Also, SoMang dormitory, studying room, lounge and fitness center which are adjoined and are not soundproof so students who studies have been complaining about the sound. During the exam period, there are many students studying until dawn so the damage is serious. Also, in the bathroom in the dormitory, there was a student who was in danger during the shower because a glass shelf fell off. As such, the dormitories may little attention about the safety and cleanliness of the facilities.
Thus, I carried a survey about the problem which students living the Hannam dormitories think. In survey about dormitory satisfaction, about 50% people chose dissatisfaction with ‘much dissatisfaction’ is 19.7%, ‘dissatisfaction’ is 28.9%. What was worse, it shocked that ‘much satisfaction’ is 0%. And in survey about dormitory facility, the highest choice is 71.1%, problem of facilities of washing machine, water purifier and air conditioner. And they follow that ‘the others’ is 46.1%, and ‘soundproofing problem’ of reading room and living rooms is 31.6% and ‘safety problem’ of bathrooms and fitness centers is 18.4%. On inquiry why they choose, many people said that the filter was dusty and they wonder if it is properly managed. According to the survey of the dormitory system, the problem of the curfew was overwhelming at about 85%. Many said that they would stay out all night because they can not go the dormitory outside of curfew. When asked about the appropriate curfew time, most of the students thought ‘between 1 and 3 p.m.’, followed by those who hoped ‘no curfew’ In other opinion, there was a lot of inconvenience about the dormitory meals system. In Hannam dormitories, students must pay the cost of 80 morning meals and 20 lunch and dinner meals. Therefore, for students who do not eat in morning, it is a very disadvantageous condition. And most of people say that there is no student who eat all 80 morning meals. In survey about inconveniences other than facilities and systems, it is mentioned many of the teacher's unfriendliness.
We carried out an interview to listen to the opinion of the manager of the dormitory asking about the problems such as curfew, facilities, etc. But all the managers of the dormitory denied in making the curfew time late saying that there are parents who are seriously worried about their children going to the dormitory at a late time for safety issue and managers say that if they increase the curfew time then it will be hard for them to leave work. Also when asked about the facilities, each dormitory had different answers. Some say that the cost to clean the air conditioner and the washing machine is too expensive so they cannot do it often and some say that they do not clean the facilities ever. And all the managers denied in installing refrigerator because of bugs and diseases problem. And also one dormitory denied in taking the interview.
As such, opinions of the students and dormitories are at odds. Despite that the dormitory problems are always mentioned due to the opposite opinion among them, there are many problems that have yet to be resolved. They enough can understand each opinion when they try to see from each one's point of view. So I think the school need some time to communicate with students and dormitories to get a better resolution.
