Have you ever heard about ‘Netflix’? Maybe you heard this because of ‘Okza’ that was directed by Bong Junho. Netflix is a one of video streaming platform which they provide video contents like drama, movie, documentary, standing comedy made by other company. But Netflix makes video contents themselves and provide them which is named ‘A Netflix Original Series’. ‘Okza’, as I mentioned before, also is a movie that was made and provided by Netflix. And Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ which won a prize from many awards was also made by Netflix. In addition, Netflix makes masterpiece constantly, these days. But some people don’t like to recognize Netflix’ as a real movie. ‘Streaming first’ policy which is about Netflix should release movies on their service faster than the theater was criticized by Christopher Nolan, saying that it is a disturbance to theater industry. And Steven Spielberg criticized Netflix’ movies saying they are TV movie, so they should be prized Emmy award not the Academy award. Also some countries including Korea has boycott Netflix’ movie. Then let’s discover why these situation have happen throughout the world.

Famous people like Nolan and Spielberg does not recognize Netflix’ movie because their movie is different with existing movie. There’s no different internally but Netflix’ movie are not released at the theater. Because with Netflix’ site or mobile application, Netflix do not need to released movie on the theater and we do not need to go to the theater to watch their movie. That is why Netflix get criticized by many people. Actually Netflix released ‘Roma’ on the theater for only 3 weeks to submit on Academy award. Originally movies are released for about 3 weeks to 2 month deciding on their success rate, but despite of the success rate Netflix has released their movie for only 3 weeks to be qualified to the be prized an Academy award. Also there is a ‘Holdback’ system that say released movie cannot be streamed for 3 years in the French movie law so Netflix’ stream first policy makes it hard to release their movie at France. Because of this ‘Cannes Film Festival’ which is one of the three film festival in the world had rejected Netflix’ submit. But it is strange that masterpiece cannot win a prize because they are not released at the theater. Prize does not represent the movie but if great movies are made, we should give a prize to recognize them by giving a price not only by good profit and good evaluation.

Then why does Netflix hold their policy? Because members who buy every month to watch Netflix are their major customer. Currently Netflix takes up 30% of video streaming service throughout the world. They have evaluated that take lead in ‘Cord-Cutting.’ ‘Cord-Cutting’ means people cancel cable television, satellite broadcasting to move to other platform. All this things can be possible because of their customers. So Netflix hold their policy because releasing their movie at the theater is not loyal to their members. Members can enjoy all of unlimited Netflix’ contents forever if you spend money as much as the movie ticket. Because of this ‘Okza’ directed by Bong Junho was boycotted by Lotte Cinema, CGV and Megabox in 2017. The reason is that Netflix’ policy ignore Korea’s holdback system. Not too long like France’s holdback period but Korea’s holdback period is 6 months. While that period, the theater releases movies and makes additional profit from selling popcorns and additional things. But if Netflix ignores the holdback system, people who go to the theater will decrease. And it will impact a critical damage to the theaters. Thus the 3 major theater decided to reject the release of ‘Okza’. Okza was only released at about 100 small and middle size theater in Korea.

Clearly the theater will be overwhelmed by Netflix soon. But we should think about the reason. Ticket price increasing rapidly and screen monopoly and oligopoly makes customer upset. And Netflix does not save money when they make a film. Different from production company who intervene when making a movie because they focus on commercial points, Netflix’ unique profit model, encourage director to try various challenge. That is why Netflix can continuously provide great movies. Already JTBC has been supported by Netflix when they make a drama and they fixed their holdback period to 1 to 2 days. Also MBC, KBS, SBS decided to fix their holdback period for Netflix’ support. Major theaters’ decision to not release ‘Okza’ was past situation but, the time when they should be obligated to release Netflix’ movies will come.

Still argument a for Netflix’ movie continues. ‘Watcha’ which is internal video streaming platform like Netflix bring out an interesting analyze result. Their success predict system which has high accuracy rate based on big data has predicted, if ‘Okza’ was released in Korea like other existing movies, about 7million people would have watch it. Definitely 7million customer is not a small figure. This result maybe very disturbing for the major theaters. However Megabox released ‘Roma’ in March, 2019 for 4 days. It was first Netflix’ movie to be released by the major theater. It was a very short period but it was a big change. This means no one knows what will happen in the future about Netflix’ movie after this Megabox’ decision.

Not everyone hate Netflix’ movie. There are many people who cheer for Netflix’ future. People started take interest in Netflix movies is a desirable situation. Because it brings out new option to people about movie. For development of the movie industry, we should adapt to Netflix’ method. If everyone adapt appearance of Netflix’ movie, we can enjoy the movie with wide and bigger screen. That is why we are going to the theater these days.
